Samantha Schmid, lyric soprano—dedicates herself to exploring culture and communication. Recently named the winner of The American Prize in Vocal Performance (women in art song and oratorio), Ms. Schmid began the 2016–17 season as an ensemble member in Beth Morrison Projects’ world premiere of the Ouroboros Trilogy, comprised of Gilgamesh (Paula Prestini), Naga (Scott Wheeler), and Pulitzer prize-winning Madame White Snake (Zhou Long); covering Ariadne in Lowell House Opera’s production of Ariadne auf Naxos; and covering Tamara and singing in the ensemble for Commonwealth Lyric Theater’s Boston premiere of Rubinstein’s The Demon. This summer, she will sing the title role in Dvořák’s Rusalka with Luke Housner’s ViVace Coaching Experience. Ms. Schmid currently resides in Boston and studies voice with Penelope Bitzas of Boston University.

 

A champion of contemporary and Slavic music, Ms. Schmid has appeared onstage with Commonwealth Lyric Theater, Beth Morrison Projects, Opera in the Ozarks, Juventas New Music Ensemble, the Russian Opera Workshop, Lowell House Opera, The Boston Conservatory, The Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, Winter Opera Saint Louis, The Franco-American Vocal Academy in Salzburg, and The Saint Louis Symphony Chorus. Previous roles include Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Constance (in the world premiere of Leo Hurley’s The Body Politic), Tina (Flight by Jonathan Dove), the title role in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, Liza (The Queen of Spades), Iphigénie (Iphigénie en Tauride), Miss Ellen (Lakmé), Zlatohřbítek the Fox (The Cunning Little Vixen), Augusta’s Friend (The Ballad of Baby Doe), and Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte).

 

Ms. Schmid has received additional recognition for her artistry, including Honorable Mention as a Finalist in The American Prize in Vocal Performance (women in opera), advancing as a national semi-finalist in the New York Lyric Opera National Vocal Competition, inauguration into the Pi Kappa Lambda national music honor society, 1st Place in the Shirley Rabb Winston Scholarship in Voice Competition (National Society of Arts & Letters, St. Louis Chapter), 1st Place in the Webster University Aria Competition, and multiple awards from The National Association of Teachers of Singing.

 

A native of Saint Louis, MO, Ms. Schmid received her Professional Studies Certificate and master’s degree in vocal performance from The Boston Conservatory. She also graduated summa cum laude with the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Webster University. For her senior thesis paper, Ms. Schmid discussed Edvard Grieg’s op. 25 song collection, Six Poems by Henrik Ibsen, and the importance of correct translations from a performance perspective.
