This spring, Lowell House Opera brings Richard Strauss’ comedic masterpiece—Ariadne auf Naxos—to life.
About the Production:
A young student composer is set to premiere a brand new opera inspired by idealized virtue and classical mythology: the magnificent Ariadne auf Naxos. Plans change when the Faculty Deans backing the project decide that the opera could use some help. They insist that a popular student improv troupe become part of the plot, throwing the up-tight opera singers into a rage. An epic battle ensues between the highbrow and lowbrow forms of entertainment. Is any reconciliation possible? Extraordinary arias, coloratura fireworks, and achingly beautiful ensembles win the day, ardently making the case for the transcendent and transformative power of music. This contemporary staging simultaneously parodies and pays tribute to Harvard house culture, and bids a fond farewell to the Lowell House performance hall before it undergoes renovation.
Lowell House’s elegant dining hall will host the entertainment with performances on Wednesday March 22nd, Friday March 24th, Saturday March 25th, Wednesday March 29th, Friday March 31st, and Saturday April 1st, conducted by Edward Elwyn Jones and directed by Roxanna Myhrum.
